✈️ United Airlines at Tokyo Narita (NRT)
NRT Hub Overview
Tokyo Narita International Airport is United Airlines' secondary Tokyo airport and Asia-Pacific connecting point. It is no longer United's primary Japan gateway — that role now belongs to Tokyo Haneda (HND), which handles United's daily mainland-US Tokyo flying from SFO, LAX, EWR, IAD, and ORD. If you're flying between the US mainland and Tokyo on United, your flight most likely uses Haneda, not Narita.
United's Narita operation is now a handful of departures a day, built around two pillars: long-haul widebody 787 service (San Francisco today, with daily Chicago–Narita launching October 24, 2026) and a growing fleet of Narita-based Boeing 737 MAX 8s. The April 2026 MAX 8 expansion is the current NRT story — these narrowbodies fly regional Pacific and Asia routes and connect passengers across the region, with Star Alliance partner ANA providing deep onward connectivity throughout Japan and Asia.

Key Routes from NRT
- US Mainland (widebody): SFO–NRT (Boeing 787). New daily ORD–NRT (787) launches October 24, 2026.
- Regional Pacific & Asia (737 MAX 8): GUM (Guam), CEB (Cebu), KHH (Kaohsiung), ROR (Palau), SPN (Saipan), ULN (Ulaanbaatar) — the April 2026 MAX 8 expansion.
- Onward connections: Star Alliance partner ANA and other carriers throughout Japan and broader Asia.
Long-haul US routes use the Boeing 787 Dreamliner with Polaris business class. The bulk of United's current Narita flying, however, is now on the Boeing 737 MAX 8 serving regional Pacific and Asia destinations. Note that United's mainland-US Tokyo widebody service is concentrated at Haneda (HND), not Narita.
Operations Notes
NRT operations are subject to a nighttime curfew (typically 11 PM – 6 AM local time). Typhoon season (June–October) can cause significant disruptions. Winter weather is generally manageable but occasional snow events can impact operations.
United's NRT schedules are timed for optimal connections to domestic Japanese rail services and partner airline flights across Asia.

Is Narita or Haneda United's main Tokyo airport?
Haneda (HND) is United's primary Tokyo gateway — SFO, LAX, EWR, IAD, and ORD all fly daily to HND. Narita (NRT) is now United's secondary Tokyo airport and Asia-Pacific connecting point, built around 787 long-haul service and a fleet of Narita-based 737 MAX 8s.
Which United planes at NRT have Starlink WiFi?
Starlink is rolling out across United's widebody 777 and 787 fleet (first 777 in service June 2026, full widebody fleet expected by summer 2027), and the Narita-based 737 MAX 8s are also getting it. Starlink is free for MileagePlus members. Check the Fleet tab for the latest count and specific tail numbers.
